Handmade ceramic studio sculpture "Multi Mass Form No. 3" by Abigail Kuohn.
The series "Multi Mass Forms" draws on core concepts from modernist architecture
concerning minimalism, tectonic legibility, and truth in materials. Produced in 2021,
during a moment of global uncertainty, the work uses a process of slab-built ceramics as
a means of negotiating with the collective desire for stability. Each piece commits to a
restrained vocabulary of block forms and monochrome finishes. Referencing work from
architects such as Tadao Ando, Ricardo Bofill and Luis Barragán, a certain degree of
utopian smoothness is considered. Utopian being the operative word, however. In this
sense, Multi Mass Forms functions within this tension between the aspiration for
completeness and the impossibility of ever fully attaining it.
Abigail is a designer working across the mediums of sculpture, photography, writing and architecture. Beginning her career in ceramics, her practice is grounded in a
consistent engagement with materiality. Her inquiries consider the origins of materials
and the ways raw inputs inevitably shape formal outputs. In architecture, this manifests
as a commitment to reuse; in sculpture, it emerges through methods of construction and
surface treatment. Her writing and photography complement the making of physical
objects by reflecting on how our built environment exists within a specific moment in
time. Together, these modes of practice form a cohesive exploration of how materials,
processes, and places shape the realities we create.
